What is the gospel?

The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ and is revealed in His birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man. There is no other name by which men must be saved.

We invite you to explore 5 central truths of the gospel through these videos, which are based on Romans 3:21-26. We hope you find them helpful!

We also want to extend an invitation to have a conversation with us about the gospel.  You're not alone! Your questions matter to God—and they matter to us, too. Whether you are skeptical about the Bible, don't believe in Jesus Christ, or do believe but have lots  of questions, we would be happy to hear from you!

Why do we need the gospel?

Most of us feel like we're "pretty good" people. However, Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But what does that actually mean—and how does it relate to the gospel itself?

...[F]or all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

—Romans 3:23

What does the gospel reveal?

The gospel shows us God's righteousness and says that we can receive His righteousness through Jesus Christ. This means that we do not have to prove ourselves! Instead, we simply receive a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe...
—Romans 3:21-22

It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
—Romans 3:26

How does the gospel work?

The work of the gospel is amazing—and it often leaves us with lots of questions. What does it mean for us to be justified and redeemed? How can we understand that God is both wrathful and loving? What does it mean that Christ died the death that we should have died?

[We] are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
—Romans 3:24-25

Where does the gospel come from?

Christianity is not based on works or good deeds. Instead, it comes from grace. God reaches for us—we do not reach for Him. But what does it mean that God is our salvation, and how can we really believe that He is pursuing us when life can be so difficult?

[We] are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
—Romans 3:24

Whom is the gospel for?

The gospel is for everyone.

...the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
—Romans 3:22

"The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope."
